Even with excellent home plumbing, toilet clogs can happen. We recommend every house have a toilet plunger on hand as it’s the most efficient way to unclog your toilet. However, if you need to get your toilet flowing and don’t have a plunger – here are our top alternatives to clear the clog.

Play the waiting game

Typically, if the toilet is clogged by something minor (like overuse of toilet paper, all it takes is time. The water in your toilet bowl is providing constant pressure on your toilet’s drain. It can take a while (possibly overnight) for the pressure to work its magic. However, you may be able to flush the toilet without issue as early as a few hours after the clog. A word of caution – be prepared to stop the flow of water in the case the clog is still present. 

Hot Water

So you tried the waiting game and the clog is still there! A bucket and some hot water may be able to help you. Now, the water should be hot, but not boiling. Pouring boiling water into a toilet can crack the bowl and give a much bigger and more expensive problem to fix. The combination of heat and water movement should help break up the clog

Dish Soap

Alright, so you tried waiting, you tried hot water and the clog is still there! Dawn Dish Soap may be the answer. Dish soap is specifically formulated to break down grease and dirt. We have all seen the images of oil-covered ocean life being washed with Dawn and that’s because it truly excels at its intended purpose. Take a ½  cup of dish soap and pour it right into the bowl. Now add hot water and wait at least 30 minutes. Depending on the clog, this might do the trick. 

Drain Cleaners

Draining cleaning chemicals isn’t exactly the most recommended method. The chemicals can be dangerous. They can cause chemical burns or damage your plumbing. They’re also not exactly the most environmentally friendly. But if you’re in a pinch and that’s what you have, they could work. Or, you could use a mixture of bleach and
